Calibration is always retroactive

It is not only consciousness that has a limited bandwidth: affect,
notwithstanding it's gestalt, is so too limited. Too much, too fast and we
fail to process - or rather postpone...

Life is an endurance sport

Live long enough and you will collect hurts, pains, scars; things will break
and mend imperfectly or not at all; even genetically errors accumulate. The
passage of time is stamped molecularly on the meat we inhabit; it is stamped
in the pathways of the brain; in the compacted memories that are the
fundament of our prejudices. Live long enough and do enough living and you
accumulate debts of kindness that can not be quantified, cannot be repaid,
that are necessarily transmuted into gifts....

There are some hurts so deep, so broad, so devastating that language fails
irretrievably, irremediably: nothing can be said and yet everything that is
said is part of a deeper communication of sympathy for truly no man is an

I am appreciative at a continually surprised level by the consistency, the
depth, the breadth and warmth of the caring and consideration of so many
that gradations of gratitude become entirely meaningless: I am used up.

Yesterday's lesson was that risk neutral actions are idealistic in the ED. Practically, for the longevity of one's career one should be risk averse....

Where cost and benefits are about equal, does risk neutrality bias towards action or inaction?

I am unreservedly not in favour of "interesting"...

During a dinner conversation my mom mentioned that when I was 14 I wrote a play that was produced at The Market Theatre. It was a morphed award winning school play that my teachers decided was almost good enough to be done professionally. The "almost" part meant a rewrite that was supposed to make it better for a paying largely adult audience.

The consequence was Disaster. The cast had to learn new dialogue very similar to the old without enough time and very little rehearsal; cues were different and more precisely timed with lighting and sound effects by professionals with much higher expectations than teachers and the paying audience expected something polished.

The original play would have been charming however unsophisticated. The revision was a trial by purgatory for audience and cast.

The lesson: success can be punishing as a stimulus to hubris....
